GrowMax Kit Setup Instructions

Complete step-by-step guide for setting up your GrowMax automated growing system

Before You Begin

This guide will walk you through setting up your GrowMax automated growing system. Please read through all instructions before starting and ensure you have all necessary tools and components.

Estimated Setup Time: 2-3 hours

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Required Tools and Materials

Tools Needed

  • Step drill bit (recommended)
  • Small drill bit for pilot holes
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Computer for programming

Materials Included

  • GrowMax control board
  • Liquid level sensor (Optomax)
  • Moisture sensors
  • Water pumps
  • T barbs and drip rings
  • Stakes for drip rings
  • Plastic gaskets and nuts

Step Bit Recommendation

For best results, use a step bit for creating the hole for the liquid level sensor. Available at Harbor Freight or Amazon:Neiko Step Drill Bit

Step-by-Step Setup Instructions

1
Water Reservoir Setup

Bucket Selection

Use a 5-7 gallon bucket for your water reservoir. Taller reservoirs can lead to gravity siphoning issues.

Liquid Level Sensor Installation:

  1. Mark a spot on the bucket wall approximately 3 inches from the bottom
  2. Use a step bit to gradually open the hole until the Optomax sensor fits tightly
  3. Thread the sensor through the hole from the outside
  4. Place the plastic gasket on the outside of the bucket
  5. Secure with the nut on the inside of the bucket

Important: The 3-inch placement prevents pumps from running dry, as they are water-lubricated and can be damaged without water.

2
Drip Ring Configuration

Assembly Steps:

  1. Connect T barbs to the drip rings as needed for your setup
  2. Position drip rings around your plants
  3. Use 2 stakes per ring for adequate support
  4. Drill out pilot holes on the bottom of rings with a small drill bit
  5. Test and adjust flow by enlarging holes as needed

Flow Direction: Only drill out holes that will emit water downward. Avoid creating holes that spray water upward at the plants.

Note: These rings are designed for constant pressure systems and have built-in flow reducers. You may need to modify the holes for optimal drip volume.

3
Moisture Sensor Positioning

Placement Guidelines:

  • Experiment with different positions around your plants
  • Place sensors at root level for accurate readings
  • Avoid areas with direct water drip to prevent false readings
  • Consider soil type and plant root spread when positioning

Testing Tip: Use Thonny IDE initially to monitor sensor readings and fine-tune positioning for optimal moisture detection.

4
Water Pump Setup

Installation Steps:

  1. Place pumps in the water reservoir
  2. Ensure pumps remain fully submerged at all times
  3. Connect tubing from pumps to drip rings
  4. Test pump operation with moisture sensor dry (air dry)

Critical: Pumps must always be submerged in water. The liquid level sensor prevents dry running by shutting off the system when water is low.

System Logic: The controller rotates between pump positions, running only one pump at a time to limit power load on the microprocessor.

5
Software Configuration

Initial Setup:

  1. Install Thonny IDE on your computer for initial testing
  2. Connect the GrowMax board to your computer via USB
  3. Load the GrowMax software onto the controller
  4. Review and modify the config file for your specific setup

Debugging: Use Thonny IDE to view real-time program output, monitor sensor values, and troubleshoot any issues during initial setup.

6
Optional Enhancements

I2C Display

Add an I2C screen to view moisture values in real-time at the point of use, providing immediate feedback without connecting to a computer.

Cloud Monitoring

Set up an API key to push data to opensensor.io for remote monitoring, historical data tracking, and graph visualization.

Additional Sensors

Consider adding these industrial sensors for enhanced monitoring:

  • SCD-4X: CO2 and temperature sensor (already supported)
  • Atlas Scientific pH probes: Micro pH monitoring
  • Custom sensors: Community-driven project supports additional sensors

Configuration Options

Your GrowMax system includes a comprehensive configuration file with various options for customizing behavior, sensor thresholds, and system parameters.

Key Configuration Areas:

  • Moisture sensor sensitivity and trigger levels
  • Pump timing and rotation schedules
  • Water level sensor thresholds
  • Network connectivity settings
  • Data logging and reporting options
  • Additional sensor integration settings

Review the config file thoroughly and adjust settings based on your specific plants, environment, and monitoring requirements.

Troubleshooting Guide

Common Issues and Solutions:

Pumps not activating

Check moisture sensor connections and ensure sensors are properly air-dried for testing.

Inconsistent watering

Verify drip ring holes are properly sized and positioned. Check for clogs in tubing.

System not responding

Ensure proper power supply and check all connection points. Use Thonny IDE to debug program execution.

Water level sensor issues

Check sensor installation and ensure gasket is properly sealed. Verify sensor is not damaged.
